Handshake AI is an AI training and data annotation platform that provides human feedback for frontier AI models. While the name "Handshake" is widely associated with the university student career network, Handshake AI's trainer programs (often referred to as the "Handshake AI Fellowship") are open to people at all career stages — from current undergrads to recent graduates, working professionals, and PhD researchers. How Handshake AI Pays

Handshake AI pays an hourly rate rather than a per-task flat fee. The platform hires generalists at lower rates while reserving higher pay for specialized professionals. Your pay is determined by the specific project you are assigned to and the level of domain expertise required.

While working, time is tracked based on the minutes you spend actively completing tasks. If a project has a 40-minute timer per task, you are paid for the time you actually spend working on it up to that limit. Payouts run through Stripe — it's the preferred and primary payment platform. Handshake also has a payment relationship with Deel that is used in some scenarios, but Stripe is the default rail. Handshake's own help center confirms the cycle: Monday 12:00 AM – Sunday 11:59 PM Pacific, processed by Wednesday afternoon, with funds available by noon PST Friday after a 48-hour processing window.

Getting In: Qualification & Tests

3. Wait for a project match — Passing an assessment puts you in the system, but you must wait for a project that fits your profile to open up. This waiting period can range from days to months.
4. Onboarding & platform access — Once assigned, you receive an email invite to the annotation platform and get access to your specific workspace — often communicated via a community app like Pronto.

As Handshake AI expanded its Fellowship program and took on more clients in late 2025 and 2026, the worker experience shifted in ways similar to Outlier and Alignerr.

• Subjective QA and strict wrongness thresholds — Handshake AI relies heavily on manual Quality Assurance reviewers. Contractors frequently note that QA scoring can be highly subjective, and a single string of poorly rated tasks can drop your average quality score below the acceptable threshold, leading to immediate removal from the project.
• The Empty Queue (EQ) reality — Work on Handshake AI is notoriously volatile. Projects scale up quickly and wind down just as fast. It is common to have access to 40+ hours of work one week and completely empty dashboards the next.
