DataAnnotation (commonly referred to as DataAnnotation.tech or simply "DA") is a highly popular AI training and data labeling platform. Unlike Outlier (Scale AI) or Alignerr (Labelbox), which are the public-facing arms of larger B2B data infrastructure companies, DataAnnotation operates largely as a standalone portal connecting freelance contractors directly with unnamed top-tier frontier model labs.

The work is heavily focused on conversational AI, RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback), red-teaming, and coding evaluations. Contractors typically log into a central dashboard and choose from a list of available projects that match their qualifications. Projects range from simple prompt-writing and fact-checking to complex, multi-turn coding problem-solving.

Because of its straightforward interface and lack of live interviews, it has become one of the most widely recommended platforms in the gig-economy space.

How DataAnnotation Pays

DataAnnotation primarily pays an hourly rate, tracked by a built-in timer at the bottom of the screen while you work on a task. A smaller subset of projects pays a flat rate per completed task.

DataAnnotation does not run a fixed weekly pay cycle. Earnings accrue continuously per task. Each task has a 7-day approval window before its earnings unlock, after which you can request a payout. Withdrawals are gated to once every ~3 days, and funds typically arrive in PayPal a few days after you request them. Payments are PayPal only — no ACH, Wise, or other rails. Your registered PayPal email must match exactly.

Getting In: Qualification & Tests

DataAnnotation's hiring process is entirely asynchronous and text-based. There are no off-platform assessments, no video calls, and no AI avatars. Instead, the platform relies on rigorous, long-form written evaluations.

1. Sign up — Register on the DataAnnotation.tech website. Eligibility is restricted to a short list of primarily English-speaking countries; this list has shifted over time, so check the current signup page before applying.
2. Starter Assessment — A brief test of reading comprehension, basic logic, and grammar.
3. Core and/or Coding Assessment — If you pass the starter test, you unlock the main qualification exams. These take 1–3 hours and require writing detailed, multi-paragraph explanations and/or solving complex coding prompts.
4. The waiting game — DataAnnotation manually reviews these tests. If you pass, you'll receive a welcome email and your dashboard will populate with paid projects.
5. The ghosting — If you fail the assessment, DataAnnotation will not notify you. Your dashboard will simply sit empty.

What Changed After the 2024 User Surge

In late 2023 and throughout 2024, DataAnnotation went viral on TikTok and YouTube as a premier "work-from-home side hustle." This resulted in a massive flood of applicants and fundamentally changed the platform's dynamics.

• Hyper-aggressive anti-fraud measures — Because of an influx of bad actors trying to game the system, DA instituted strict IP tracking. Using a VPN, traveling out of the country, or accessing the site from a public Wi-Fi network can trigger an immediate, permanent account loss.
• The "Permanent EQ" phenomenon — While Empty Queues happen naturally between project batches, "Permanent EQ" became a dreaded term.
